The Overview Effect

The Overview Effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by astronauts and cosmonauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from orbit or from the lunar surface, that produces a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life and mankind’s place upon it.

Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, and an understanding of the fragility of life on earth that is shielded and nourished by a paper-then atmosphere. From space, boundaries vanish, divisive conflicts lose meaning, and the need to create a planetary society with a united will to protect our fragile earth becomes both obvious and imperative.

Overview As It Relates To Entrepreneurship

The over-view effect is important for entrepreneurs and corporate leaders because it encourages them to develop a board perspective and appreciation for every component of their business, and how they affect the overall success of the company.

The over-view effect promotes big picture thinking.

From the individual people to workplace policies, production plans, pricing strategies, marketing guidelines, operational targets, environmental policies, and corporate strategy sessions, each part holds weight, value and contributes to the success of the whole organization.

Building a business is about creating an interconnected system.

Each component must be appropriately managed and cared for to ensure the long-term viability and success of the business.

Without the right perspective individual components can spiral out of control and damage the operations and success of the company.

It is this challenge that drives business to often divide the roles of the CEO and the COO.

The CEO must be a big picture visionary, dedicated to thinking about how to navigate the business along the best possible route to success. Conversely, the COO must be a small picture visionary to create the best policies and practices that can support the operations of the business and align with the long-term vision of the CEO.

But, and most importantly, both the CEO and the COO must be able to appreciate the big and small picture perspectives in order to successfully work in tandem and ensure the long-term viability of the business.
